Growing up in a small Kansas town, I had slim pickings when it came to the dating pool in high school. They were all similar versions of the same trope—white, handsome, and athletic. Diversity was hard to come by. My high school sweetheart was a wonderful All-American guy—but we had nothing in common, besides our taste in music. I felt understood. I even went out with a few Uruguayan guys—some who looked white, but none who won the approval of my father. You see, my old man always liked to tease me that he wanted me to end up with a white man—but it never quite felt like an actual joke. His reasoning varied over the years, most commonly ending with the fact that marrying my white, American mother was the best decision he ever made. He was open about the fact that he wanted me to end up with someone educated with whom I could have an easy, safe, stable life. Sadly, this way of thinking is not uncommon in the Latino community.

He would spend hours preparing his mask every morning for whatever crowd, person or community he faced. Even years later, my pops still took longer to get ready than my mother and sister combined, delicately taking a black Sharpie to any stray grays that might pop up in his goatee.
My pops would explain that as a young man in the Dominican Republic, you had to work so hard perfecting yourself, preparing your mask, so that when a young European or American woman came through, she might choose you, as he would put it, might take you home with her, like that was your only way out. Later he made his way to New York City, where he met my mother, who is Colombian. Selected by whom became and remains my dilemma.

We get along well, and I thoroughly enjoy his company. He has never been anything but kind and supportive. My parents have an issue with the match. My boyfriend is Latino, born and raised in a South American country. He speaks and understands English well, although speaking it does make him a little nervous. I speak Spanish fluently, so when we talk to each other, he speaks in Spanish and I speak in English, and we have no problem communicating.
My parents think that relationships especially marriages are already hard enough, and adding cultural differences to the equation is a dangerous gamble for my future happiness. They strongly oppose my continuing my relationship with him.
That maybe we like each other. I fantasize about our meet-cute. I spent my childhood surrounded by black and brown kids, but when I got to high school, suddenly everyone around me was white. Like most of the girls in my class, I wanted attention from the boys.
